On Tuesday, August 13th, we held the Empowering You webinar, a crucial event aimed at helping you navigate the voting process and make your voice heard in the upcoming elections. With Election Day set for November 5, 2024, it’s essential to be prepared and informed about how you can cast your vote. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to register, vote, and stay informed about the upcoming elections.

Registering to Vote: Your Options

Online Registration If you have a driver’s license, Minnesota ID card, or the last four digits of your Social Security number, you can quickly register online at MNvotes.org. Don’t forget to include your email address for confirmation.

Paper Registration Prefer to handle things offline? Download the voter registration application and mail it, or submit it in-person at your county election office or the Minnesota Secretary of State Office located at the First National Bank Building, 332 Minnesota St., Suite N201, Saint Paul, MN 55101.

Same-Day Registration If you missed the registration deadlines, don’t worry! Minnesota offers same-day voter registration. You can register at your polling location on Election Day. Remember to bring:

  • A driver’s license, state ID card, learner’s permit, or Tribal ID with your current address.
  • Alternatively, bring an up-to-date photo ID and a document showing your current name and address. Accepted documents include utility bills, bank statements, or a current student fee statement.

If you live in a residential facility, a staff member can vouch for your residence, proving your address without requiring additional identification.

Creating Your Voting Plan

Early Voting You have the option to vote early in person at your local elections office from September 20 to November 4, 2024. Locate your nearest elections office on the Minnesota Secretary of State website. During your visit, you can also register to vote and complete your absentee ballot if preferred.

Election Day Voting If you choose to vote on Election Day, check your polling location and ensure you know how to get there. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on November 5, 2024. Bring the necessary identification or proof of residence as outlined above.

Absentee Voting For those who prefer the convenience of voting from home, absentee ballots are available. Request your absentee ballot, complete it with a witness’s signature (who must be a registered Minnesota voter or notary), and return it promptly by mail, in person, or via an agent delivery service.

Staying Informed

Being an informed voter is key to making impactful decisions. Here’s how to stay updated:

  • Candidate Websites: Check the candidates’ websites for their platforms and policies.
  • Local Media: Follow local newspapers like the Star Tribune, MinnPost, and Minnesota Public Radio for election news and candidate interviews.
  • Voter Forums: Attend local voter forums to hear directly from the candidates.
  • Direct Contact: Reach out to candidates via their campaign websites to ask questions and get more information.
