As MDI celebrates its 60th anniversary, we reflect on the many lives that have been transformed through our commitment to providing access to meaningful employment. This year’s theme, “Access to Good Jobs for All: Increasing Access & Unlocking Opportunity,” resonates deeply with the inspiring story of Kathy Mayer, whose journey exemplifies our mission.

Kathy’s life took a significant turn when health issues led her to move from Minneapolis back to Hibbing, MN. With a history of struggles in securing stable employment, Kathy’s path to finding a fulfilling job was not an easy one. However, her journey led her to MDI, where she found a welcoming community and a role that aligns perfectly with her skills and interests.

Now working as an assembler for our plastic totes, Kathy finds joy in the variety her job offers. “There is always something new to learn on the job,” Kathy says, reflecting on her experience. Her previous work in the restaurant industry provided a solid foundation, but it was at MDI where she truly found her calling.

Outside of work, Kathy indulges in her favorite hobbies—cross-stitching, walking, coloring, and word searches. At MDI, she values the fun and supportive work environment and the opportunity to connect with many people. Her dedication and positive attitude have not gone unnoticed. Kathy was recently asked to be a mentor for two high school students undergoing on-the-job training, where she excelled in teaching with patience and care.

Kathy’s story is a testament to the transformative power of inclusive employment opportunities. Her success highlights our ongoing commitment to unlocking access and creating pathways for individuals to thrive. As we celebrate our 60th year, we are proud to have Kathy as part of the MDI family and look forward to continuing our mission of empowering people and fostering growth.

Kathy’s journey from facing employment challenges to becoming a valued mentor at MDI exemplifies the impact of providing good jobs for all. Her story is a powerful reminder of why our work is so important and why we remain dedicated to increasing access and unlocking opportunities for everyone.
